Power Flying at Sackville

Sackville Farm is home to a small but active power flying group and their aircraft. Many, but not all of the pilots are also glider and microlight pilots. Aircraft currently based at Sackville Farm include a Piper Cherokee, a Jodel, a Falconar and a Grob 109. The Grob 109 is also used by the Gliding Club for glider towing, and there are usually 'Insurance only' shares available in this aircraft.

Piper Cherokee Sackville Farm has been associated with powered flight since 1946 when Jack Wilkinson, who had previously been flying Primary Gliders at Dunstable and Autogyros at Sywell, started to operate an Auster from here. The Auster was followed by a Klemm Swallow and a Miles Messenger. Jack's sons Peter and David followed the family tradition and also flew from here, and indeed, David still does. Tim, the third generation of Wilkinsons to fly from Sackville Farm, started flying here in 1978, and since then, there have been many aircraft in residence, including a Cessna 140, a Cherokee 140, and a Rallye 180. In the 1990s Tim's daughter Sam also started flying here, making the tally so far of four generations of flyers. Gliding started in the mid 1980s, following the sale by the MOD of Twinwood Farm airfield, from which the RAE Gliding Club operated. The first microlight aircraft to fly from Sackville Farm did so in the late 1980s.
