Microlight Flying at SackvilleAt Sackville we cover the whole spectrum of microlight flying from trial lessons, “ab intio” training to conversion training between the microlight types, and have a resident examiner who is able to carry out General Skills Tests on completion of training for the award of the NPPL licence. Once qualified, pilots who choose to do so can keep an aircraft of their own on the airfield. We strive to integrate all our flying activities in a friendly club environment, and even when not flying like to socialise together over a few cups of coffee or a barbeque. Come and see our excellent facilities including a 730 metre long grass runway in uncontrolled airspace, large club house, hangarage where you are not crammed in like sardines and above all, a very enthusiastic group of like minded aviators. |

Training Microlight training at Sackville has been carried out for some time on the more traditional AX2000 type fixed wing microlight and weight shift and flex wings (sometimes – incorrectly - referred to as hang glider types). These facilities remain, and in addition we can now offer trial lessons in the fabulous Aerospool WT9 Dynamic as pictured here. There are only 14 or so of these aircraft in this country at the moment, mostly privately owned, and it is believed only this one is the first to be fully available for instruction. Training is carried out by David D'Ath and Neill Howarth, as well as Tim Wilkinson when he is available. All three instructors are very experienced aviators and are all Qualified Flying Instructors. Tim is an airline captain, operating scheduled passenger services from London City Airport, although when not doing so enjoys instructing on microlights, as well as flying self launching and non-powered gliders and a hot air ballon. David started flying with an RAF flying Scholarship and was awarded his PPL licence while he was still at school. He was an Instructor Officer in the Royal Navy, and lectured on high speed flight at honours degree level. He has found modern microlights now satisfy his love of flying. His enthusiasm shows and he loves to pass on his flying skills to his students. He is also the school’s resident flight and ground examiner. Neill began flying microlights in the 1980s, and has amassed hundreds of hours on a broad spectrum of Flexwing and fixed wing aircraft. He is a fully qualified flying instructor and has an examiner rating. In 2008 he decided to get involved full time with the flying school at Sackville. |
