Gliding at Sackville

Gliding offers a truly exciting flying experience. Gliders fly in the same way as powered aircraft, though their performance is optimised ( through streamlining and having large wing - spans ), enabling them to climb easily in the rising air currents generated by the sun heating the ground ( thermals ) and by the wind blowing against or over mountains ( ridge lift and wave lift ). Gliders can and often do cover large distances, flights of between 300km and 500km are common on reasonable summer days. Glider pilots from Sackville regularly fly as far as Yorkshire, East Anglia and the Welsh Borders. Gliders usually fly at heights of between 1000ft and cloudbase, which often can be as high as 5500ft in this country.

Club Scene Training
All gliding in the UK is carried out under the auspices of the British Gliding Association ( BGA ) and all gliding instruction at Sackville Gliding Club is carried out in a two seat glider by qualified, BGA - rated instructors, in a supportive, club environment. There is no upper age limit for learning to fly gliders, though there is a lower age limit ( 16 years ) for flying solo. Many youngsters start their flying training before this age, and indeed, many actually fly their first solo flights on their 16th birthdays !
There aren't any stringent medical requirements to be met before flying a glider - provided that you are medically fit to drive, you can fly a glider.

If you fancy giving gliding a try, why not contact us and book a trial lesson - but be warned - gliding is very addictive !!!

Costs
Many people mistakenly believe that all forms of aviation are inherently expensive. This is often not the case. At Sackville Gliding Club the only charges are an annual membership fee and a launch fee for each launch taken. All flying in club aircraft, whether for a fifteen minute flight or for a five hour flight, is covered by the annual membership fee. All gliding training instruction is provided free of charge by BGA - qualified volunteer instructors.

Club Scene Vintage Gliders at Sackville
With the aim of enabling as many people as possible to fly vintage gliders, Sackville Gliding Club has acquired a number of vintage gliders and will continue to acquire more as time goes on. Sackville Gliding Club aims to preserve these aircraft for the future whilst having as many of these aircraft as possible available for members and visitors to fly. Over the years, the Club has hosted many vintage aircraft fly-ins and vintage glider group visits, and shall continue to do so. Sackville Gliding Club is a club for the future with an eye on the past.
